Victor Young Instructor Sapienza English 1B March 12, 2008 Poetry Essay Death is universally recognized, feared, accepted, and in some cases denied by anyone and everyone. The short story, "The Jilting of Granny Weatherall," written by Katherine Anne Porter has a theme of death, as well as the poem, "I Heard a fly buzz when I died," written by Emily Dickenson. Both are similar in theme but unlike in tone. Dickenson's tone in her poem is factual and concise, and Porter's narration is unreliable and confusing. Porter's story deals with the denial, rejection, and coming to terms with death while the Dickenson's poem deals with the acceptance of death but then comes to obtaining second thoughts.
