La scrittrice vive a cavallo di due secoli con grandi trasformazioni sociali, politiche, economiche, industriali e letterarie ed i suoi scritti oscillano tra il Verismo ed il Decadentismo. Deledda descrive nei i suoi romanzi scene di vita ambientate in Sardegna e riesce a darci un quadro completo della vita di fine 1800 attraverso elementi tipici di quel periodo e, con la loro analisi potremo vedere come, in realtà, la società sarda non fosse a quei tempi tanto immobile come si pensava.
