STONEHENGE IS THE BEST KNOWN EXAMPLE OF THE STONE CIRCLES BUT THERE ARE MANY OTHER EXAMPLES FOUND IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF BRITAIN AND EUROPE. PRESENT THE ARGUMENTS ADVANCED FOR THE VIEW THAT THEY ARE EARLY EXAMPLES OF AN ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATORY AND COMMENT ON THE VALIDITY OF THE ARGUMENTS. Much controversy surrounds the true function of prehistoric stone circles. The most valued theory is that they were built as astronomical observatories, used as grand scale calendars. Today it is hard to imagine that what appear to be randomly placed rocks across Britain and Europe from Millennia's ago were actually monumental astronomical and engineering designs, equivalent to a modern day computer. However, many of the great monuments and ceremonial sites built by the ancients were astronomically aligned.
