Carrie Bradshaw - How Difficult was it to build the Canal at Stoke Bruerne? The construction of the Grand Junction canal at Stoke Bruerne posed many complications that had to be overcome, both engineering wise as well as social problems locally, one of the main problems was purchasing the land through which the proposed route was to pass. From the map of Stoke Bruerne before construction it is clear that most of the land belonged to the Duke of Grafton, or the Rector who rented the land from the Duke. However, the Rector objected to the proposed route, as it would cut some of his land in half. Nevertheless the canal went through the rector's land and due to this I can infer that some agreement in order to accommodate the needs of the Rector, it was clear on the site visit that there had been a bridge built, as there was...
