Joshua Gendron Descriptive or technical TRAINS The first locomotive or train was first built in England in 1804. It was built by a British engineer and inventor named Richard Trevithick. The locomotive he built operated on metal rails that were smooth and had four metal wheels. His success proved that the locomotive could have sufficient traction with smooth wheels on a set of two smooth parallel rails. After his success, over the next one hundred years many more advances where made. From the earliest design in England more improvements were made. The two top leading countries in the locomotive industry were the United States of America and the United Kingdom, also known as Great Britain or England. In 1831 the Bogie was made (swiveling locomotive truck). In 1837 counterbalances were developed. In 1847 the ten wheeler finally appeared.
