With the change of temperature, metals change in terms of volume but more importantly in terms of length. A change in length of any metal structure may change the way the piece operates and may cause damage to other parts of the mechanical system it is used in. Improper care and inconsideration is surely a fault dreaded by designers and engineers as such a case can have the potential of causing millions of dollars in damage or lost money for companies such as car manufacturers.
