1914 - First Ypres During the first weeks of October German troops concentrated around Ypres for an offensive against the city and British forces. Earlier on, fighting in France came to a standstill and 'the Race to the Sea' launched. The German goal was to beat the British forces at Ypres and thus gain access to a number of ports on the North sea. The German High Command and the Kaiser were extremely optimistic about the outcome of this offensive. At Ypres the British were not at full strength and a breakthrough was possible. The fighting at Langemarck (October 21st - October 24th) At the 19th of October First Ypres started. South of Ypres, in France there had already been some exchange of fire and skirmishes.
