You are hired to teach a struggling student (Joy) more effective study skills. Describe five different strategies that you will teach Joy so that she can study and learn more effectively. Include at least one strategy that will enable Joy to transfer the things she learns to new situations. Firstly, I would teach her to retrieve relevant prior knowledge. Students can engage in meaningful learning only to the extent that they have previous knowledge to which new information can be related and are also aware of the potential relationship. How can we encourage students to think about the things they already know as they encounter new information? One approach is to model this strategy for our students. For example, I might read aloud a portion of a textbook, stopping occasionally to tie an idea in the text to something previously studied in class or to something in our own personal experiences....
