The following rationale will discuss how a two-week teaching unit will progress pupils' knowledge and understanding of a specific subject area and also enhance discussion and reasoning. _____________________________________________________________________ The communication of ideas plays an essential role in the development of a strong mathematical understanding in children. Before the introduction of the Numeracy Strategy, the communication of mathematics took the form of teaching by rote. Nickson, (2000) describes this teaching style as a behaviouristic model by a singularly didactic transmission of knowledge. Askew & Dylan, (1995) state how didactic teaching is not always assumed to be the most efficient way to learning as it is questionable as to whether the learning has been understood. Nickson, (2000) James, (1985) in Anghileri, (1995:38), Thompson, (1999) and the DfEE/QCA, (1999) negate teaching by rote stating that discussion and reasoning are paramount in the development of a strong mathematical understanding and by communicating mathematical thinking and reasoning
