Models in defining disability are used in order to approach, identify, and respond to disabilities and Special Educational Needs (SEN). The two models that are commonly used within modern day society are that of the medical model and the social model. The medical model of disability concentrates on the child's condition or diagnosis, identifying that there is a problem with the child and moreover trying to change or 'cure' the child in order for them to fit in with their environment. This model can also be described as the individual model of disability with Oliver (1996) arguing that there is no such thing as the medical model, but only the individual model with medicalisation playing a very important factor.
