Spearman American Military University Abstract Increasing Academic Achievement in Adult Learners by Understanding Barriers to Learning Adult learning is a highly individualized human endeavor posing numerous challenges for the educator. Often these challenges are presented in the form of barriers to learning that stem directly from a student's negative academic self-image. The more educators understand these barriers to learning the more they can help their students increase their potential for academic achievement. There are basically four major barriers to learning that are of most concern to the educator- modal, motivational, and psychological. Modal barriers involve a faulty systems approach to the learner's self-disciplinary learning habits. Motivational barriers result from having an imbalance between intrinsic and extrinsic motivators.
