It is important for a student teacher to appreciate how children think, in terms of mathematical number operations, in order for them to be better capable of helping further their students' understanding and their ability in every aspect of mathematics. Research into, and findings on, children carrying out number operations can aid the potential for a student teacher's comprehension of the way children think where the children themselves cannot: primary pupils often find it difficult to explain the arithmetical processes their minds conduct because they find it hard to reflect upon their own thinking, and are often unsure as to what the 'right' answer might be.
