EDU660-Dr. Barry Meinster Twilla Liles American InterContinental University Introduction Standards-based education was developed several years ago in an effort to help underachieving schools, in all fifty states, raise student achievement (Olson, 2006). Weston Public Schools (2003) define it as "an approach to teaching and learning that emphasizes standards which drive assessment, unit and lesson designs, and instruction." Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center (2006) states "teaching, curriculum and assessment are guided by a series of goals (standards) and sub-goals (benchmarks). The goals define the learning priorities of the school and community." There are many supporters of standards-based education as well as those who believe that a standards-based education will not work in the United States.
