Verrocchio's workshop was one of the most important in Florence for a long period during the mid Fifteenth century. It was in constant competition with other large workshops, such as that of the Pollaiuolo, vying for the most profitable and challenging commissions, mainly of the small and private objects that were now fashionable among Florentine high society. It was because of this that Verrocchio constantly had to build upon the work of his predecessors and innovate in style and methods to ensure a constant stream of interested clientele who were lured by his high reputation as an artist with the power of invenzione.
