The Poujadist movement, launched in 1953 by Pierre Poujade was initially a localised anti-fiscal protest by small shopkeepers, which in the last years of the Fourth Republic (1946-1958) flourished into a national political force. This essay will analyse Poujadism in detail, in determining its origins and identifying the reasons for its rise to power and the success experienced at the legislative elections of January 1956. Consequently, the demise of this movement, to its end in 1958 will be discussed, in respect to the surrounding political climate - that of the Fourth Republic.
