Alex Bernardi 10/1/2004 Research Essay LIT 209 Research Essay Romanticism Romanticism is a literary and artistic movement of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries that placed value on emotion or imagination over reason. Sources say Romanticism started in reaction to neo-classicism, or the Enlightenment. The most important result of romanticism was the emphasis laid upon the supernatural. Some writers during this time period were Mary Shelley with Frankenstein, Edgar Allen Poe with various poems and selections, such as The Raven, The Tell-Tale Heart, and The Masque of the Red Death and various works by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ralph Emerson, and Walt Whitman. While Shelly was profound, and equally Hawthorne and their colleagues, it was Poe who I believe was the most influential. Along with Poe, it was a man named Washington Irving who proved to be one of the greater contributors to the Romantic era.
