Boeke MUSC 220H Prof. Fairfield NIU Philharmonic: Violin and Erhu Concertos February 13, 2002, Boutell Memorial Concert Hall Kevin McMahon, Conductors The first piece, "Overture to 'The School for Scandal'" by Samuel Barber, had little solos flitting through the score. It started out with violin pizzicato while the flute had a solo, but it continued with a clarinet solo while the violins plucked on. It felt a little disjoined, and there were points where the notes were painfully discordant. This piece was written for the full orchestra. By the same author, "Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 14" had three movements: Allegro, Andante, and Presto in Moto Perpetuo, respectively. Maureen Nelson played the violin solo wonderfully, with a constant cello pizzicato underpinning. Being a percussionist myself, I noticed that the timpanist realized he played to loudly in the transition from the first to the second movement. The second movement really should've been in...
