Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the following methods of illustrating books: copper engraving, wood engraving, lithography Engraving began with cave art, evidence of which can be found on cave walls, stone and bones. It is thought that printing in the form of rubbing was first produced as early as the second century by the Chinese. Europe was printing with textiles from the sixth century, but it was not possible to print on paper until developments in Spain in the 12th century. Woodcuts were around since the 15th century, having been used to produce playing cards in Germany. Metal engraving as produced later, more refined than the wood methods.
