Most people would agree that self-expression is a very healthy and necessary entity in which all individuals should exercise. The origins of self-expression can very well be traced to the Romantic era, where artists searched for a sense of freedom in their personal thought. This search manifested itself in their work. Author Aphra Behn and composer Ludwig van Beethoven were both artists during the Romantic era. Both were extremely effective in using their talents to convey their messages to their audiences. Behn and Beethoven find even more of a common ground as they both addressed another theme of the Romantic era: glorification of a heroic figure. The two artists combined the two themes by using their self-expression in order to pay tribute to those they admired. The idolizations that occur in Behn's Oroonoko and Beethoven's Eroica are characteristic of Romantic style, a style which contributes to their universal appeal. The rich...
