a) Describe the growth of international tourism during the second half of the 20th century. The growth of international tourism during the second half of the twentieth century has been phenomenal. The number of overseas visitors to Britain had risen to 1 million soon after 1950. It then rose to 2 million in in 1963 and then to 6 million in 1970. It then exceeded 15 million in 1987 and in 1990, the number of overseas residents made a record 18 million visits to Britain and the number of tourists has been steadily rising ever since. This is however, only one example of tourism growth. Throughout the entire world international tourism growth has taken place. The graph below shows the growth of international tourists worldwide and as you can see, since 1950-1999 the numbers of overseas visitors has gone from about 40 million in 1950, to 70 million in 1960.
