The most recent and key piece of research into the backpacking community is 'Backpacker Ethnographies' by Anders Sørensen (1993). Sørensen writes about the norms and values of backpacker culture, plus the age and background of most such travellers. While "Uriley, Yonay and Simchai (2002) convincingly question the question the notion of backpacking as a distinct and homogenous category", Sørensen states that "Most of these individuals [backpackers, independent travellers] will generally acknowledge they are backpackers or (budget) travellers, and even those who do not accept those labels will still relate or react to them.
