The Eiffel Tower Reactions and Recommendations The Eiffel tower was designed in 1889 as the tallest structure in the world at the time (985 feet) and described as a "... 300m flagpole" by its designer, Gustave Eiffel (http://www.paris.org). During the past three years the tower has been affected by many global events, some of which have had a good affect whilst others have been detrimental. It can definitely be said that global events over the past 3 years have been very tough for tourism. International incidents affecting tourism have included the events of September 11, a global economic downturn caused by the accounting frauds at Enron, Parmalat, WorldCom and others, the war in Afghanistan, the war in Iraq, SARS and mad cow disease.
