Alexander Landman Industry Environment. Entry barriers The entrance of new competitors into the Airline Industry is slow because the industry is highly concentrated. The airline industry continually attracts capital for new start-ups, but the failure rate for the new companies which are entering the industry is high. Of the 43 airlines launched in the United States between 1978 and 1993, only two: America West and Midwest Express Holdings Inc. have survived. The main reason why small airline carriers fail is because they cannot offer the same frequency of flights as any major airline can. The other reason why they fail is because of retaliation of their competitors which were operating in the industry before. When the new firm offers deep discounted fares, the major airlines match the fare for flights at the same time as the start-up carrier's. A lot of new start-ups have to file bankruptcy.
