Friedberg discusses mobile and virtual exhibitions and installations, and how the idea originated from the panopticon. Examples of these mobilized and virtual simulations include the cinema, phantasmagorias, panoramas, dioramas, stereoscope, etc., which brings us to the flaneur/flaneuse and their connection to mobilized and virtual simulations. These mobilized and virtual simulations allow the flanuer/flaneuse - a person who strolls through something to experience it - to exist, without ever actually having to move. The flaneuse is the reason for the development of department stores.
