Introduction For over two decades ago the practice of manufacturers pressuring retailers to use the compulsory recommended retail price to price their products was very common. (Merrilees & Miller, 1996:241). The picture of today's competitive retail environment is very different from what it was. Today it is extremely important to link pricing decisions to the overall retail strategy. Merrilees and Miller (1996:102) suggest the retail strategy defines "the scope and purpose of the business, the target market, the key offerings in the market place relative to competitors and the integration and co-ordination of the retail mix to support this strategy". Implementing a sound pricing strategy can give the retailer great advantages over its competitors.
