The number of large brewers has decreased rapidly in the last decades. How can this be reconciled with the fact that Microbreweries have sprung up in the last years? In other words, can the same reasons that have caused a decrease in large breweries also explain the emergence of Microbreweries? Microbrewery: A craft-brewery that produces less than 15,000 barrels of beer per year principally for distribution to restaurants, taverns and retail stores, and in some cases for direct sale to consumers for on-site consumption or take-out in small containers. Reasons for decline of large brewers * Mergers: * Economies of scale Emergence of microbreweries While advantageous for the national and super-regional brewers, the consolidation of the beer industry severely limited consumers' purchasing options. Using low cost ingredients, the major brewers produce a homogenous group of beers that can be mass-produced to take advantage of economies of scale, thus limiting consumer choice.
