The application of Taguchi methods to solve the design problems of Western industry - an evaluation In the past 20 years the Western World industry has lost its competitive edge in manufacturing. A significant portion of this loss has been attributed to a decline in product quality. As Moir P. discovered, the stakes in the quality contest are high; business analysts at International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) have estimated the costs of non-conformance or failure to meet quality standards in IBM's products, at a minimum, as 11% of revenue - or over 5600 million dollars in 1986. The design problems of Western industry rise to the increased quality standards of the Japanese and their effective implementation of statistical methods on research designs.
