Introduction Sir Jack Cohen, who used his gratuity from his army service in the First World War, to start selling groceries in London's East End in 1919, founded Tesco in 1924. The first Tesco store was opened in 1929 in Burnt Oak, Edgware, London. From then on, Tesco has developed and took every opportunity to grow bigger and expand in the mainstream, responding to new opportunities and pioneering many innovations, to become one of the largest food retailers in the world, operating 2318 stores and employing 32600 people. The UK in the company's core market, where there're 1878 stores across the country, operating under four banners: Extra, Superstore, Metro and Express.
