Hypothesis Testing The basic idea behind hypothesis testing is to prove or disprove the research question. By only allowing an error of 5% or 1% and making correct decisions based on statistical principles, the researcher can determine that the result must be real if chance alone could provide the same result only 5% of the time or less. Null and Alternative Hypothesis In hypothesis testing, suggestion that undergoes confirmation to determine if it should be accepted or discarded in favor of an alternative proposition is referred to as null and alternative hypothesis. A null hypothesis is often articulated as something that can be established or disproven. For example, in market research, the null hypothesis would be "A ten-percent increase in price will not adversely affect the sale of this product" (BusinessDictionary.com, 2008).The alternative hypothesis to this statement would be, "A ten-percent increase in price will adversely affect the sale of this product.
