Coal gasification is the conversion of coal to gaseous products, which include hydrogen, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane and other gases. The actual process consists of reacting the coal with steam, oxygen, air, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, or a mixture of these. The proportions of the gases in the product stream depend on the specific reactants and conditions employed within the reactor. If air is used instead of pure oxygen in a process known as "air-gasification", the product stream will include nitrogen. Adding steam to the oxidant stream will increase the proportion of hydrogen produced. Alternatively, a coal-water slurry can be formed by adding water as a liquid to the input stream.
