Mobil is described in the industry as a downstream business, which involves refining, retail marketing, the production and distribution of lubricant base stock, finished lubricants and specialty petroleum products, and the distribution of petroleum. Mobil's corporate roots could be traced in one direction back to the formation of Vacuum Oil in 1866, and in another, to John D. Rockefeller's standard Oil Trust, which later absorbed the smaller company. By 1912, Vacuum had become an international lubricating oil company, two-thirds of whose business volume was outside the United States.
