Engaged in manufacturing of household appliances, aircraft engines, diesel locomotives and medical systems, General Electric sustained more than 10 business groups, 46 divisions, 190 departments, and 43 strategic business units designed to support the strategic planning of General Electric's central management process. During the 1970's Reg Jones, a former CEO to General Electric had difficulty keeping up with reviewing and approving the massive volumes of information generated by the 43 strategic business units. The company had simply grown to an unmanageable size. In 1977 General Electric's departments, divisions and Strategic Business Units were regrouped under a new organizational layer of sectors which represent macro business agglomerations such as consumer products, power systems and technical products.
