'Although considered only human, one Muslim writer describes Muhammad as "[T]he best model for man in piety and perfection. He is a living proof of what man can be and of what he can accomplish in the realm of excellence and virtue. . . ."'1 The practice of leadership is strongly discouraged by Islam, and this makes the faith radically different from other systems. Therefore the standing of Muhammad within a Muslim community is one which is of exception, especially as the art of leadership came so naturally to the prophet.
