What makes an Effective Leader of Schools In Difficulty? Abstract This report highlights the main characteristics of effective leaders in SFCC (Schools Facing Challenging Circumstances). However, it also argues, that not all leaders can adapt to different styles of leadership according to the situation. The report is based on a group of secondary schools in which 25% of pupils, or less, achieve success at external examination at 16. The research, which this report is based on, was funded by the National College for School Leadership. Introduction This report will be focused on what makes an effective leader of schools in difficulty. In trying to answer this question, the issues that will be covered will be aimed at exploring how far leaders in schools facing challenging circumstances shared similar approaches to leadership and the extent to which the particular demands of the school context shaped or influenced their leadership styles.
