North Atlantic Treaty Organization Of all the international organizations in effect today, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, commonly known as NATO, has been and still is one of the most effective and successful of its kind. For over 50 years NATO has played an important role in protecting the security and freedom of its member countries and in maintaining peace. Although NATO functions primarily as a military alliance, it also plays a large role politically. NATO is based on the North Atlantic Treaty of 1949.
