Compare and contrast at least two theories of leadership. What approach would you advise leaders to adopt, and why? ( o hrm august 2001, section A) Introduction Definition of leadership: "A special case of interpersonal influence that gets an individual or group to do what the leader wants done." Firstly it can be useful to distinguish leadership from management. The role of a manager is to promote stability or to enable an organization to run smoothly. The role of the leader, on the other hand, is to promote adaptive or useful changes. Managers perform both roles, but it can be argued that good leadership is most essential to organizations in an unstable environment. One can also distinguish between formal and informal leadership, formal leadership being exerted by persons with a formal authority and informal being persons that exert leadership (usually in a group or team) because of their skills.
