Bechtel was founded in 1898 by Warren A. Bechtel, whose first project was grading railroad beds with a mule-drawn scraper in Oklahoma Territory. By 1906 W.A. Bechtel has established good reputation and was contracting on railroad jobs up and down the Pacific coast of the United States. With time the W.A. Bechtel Co. was also building roads, tunnels, bridges, and dams. Warren A. Bechtel had a great work ethic to which customers responded, and the business prospered. W.A. use to say: "When you can't trust a man's word you can't trust his signature." Bechtel learned to rely on most modern methods available to get the work done efficiently, and that tradition continues today. W.A and his sons pioneered such applications as dump trucks and tractors right on the job site. In 1931 Bechtel was one of the six companies that was contracted to build Hoover Dam. After W.A.
