What are the motivating characteristics of work? Discuss with reference to well-known theories on work motivation. The word motivation comes from the Latin word "movere" which means "to move". Today, however, the word has taken on a whole new meaning and nowadays the word refers "the forces either within or external to a person that arouse enthousiasm and persistance to pursue a certain course of action". (Daft, 1997). If the level of motivation of the workforce could influence productivity it is clear that it was in the companies best interest to have motivated employees. However, it was not until the negative side effects of Taylorism (absenteism, sabotage, and unionisation) were becoming too blatant to just ignore, that management started to pay attention to the word motivation.
