This short essay highlights five key learning points taken from lectures, and expands on them through further reading. The points are then applied to the relevant management issues that arose during our first class: The Managers Job. According to Henry Mintzberg's managerial roles theory, managers perform different roles at different times. He has defined three types of managerial roles, which are interpersonal, informational and decisional. Monitor, disseminator and spokesperson are informational roles. Entrepreneur, disturbance handler, resources allocator and negotiator belong to decisional roles. Further research has shown that the differing roles are greater in different levels of management. The higher levels of the organisations management tend to be more engaged in roles such as disseminator, figurehead and spokesperson.
