Serena Williams Motivation Motivation is ' the internal mechanisms and external stimuli which arouse and direct our behaviour' Motivation refers to a general energised state, which prepares a person to act or behave in some way. Extrinsic motivation is related to the external factors that drive an athlete to participate and perform. External factors often come in the form of rewards such as medals, badges or prizes. Intrinsic motivation are internal drives such as for the enjoyment of the sport. It can be the sense of achievement a person experiences as a result of being successful in their performance or the satisfaction received from completing a challenging task. In the recent Australian Open, Serena Williams beat her sister, Venus Williams in the final. Her motivation to succeed was intrinsic and extrinsic.
