The aim of this essay is to discuss to what extent broad banding is an improvement on traditional job evaluation, as a means of valuing jobs. The first part of the essay will outline the definitions of both broad banding and traditional job evaluation. The body of the essay will discuss each method and its application, and the final part of the body will compare the two methods and evaluate which is the best, as a means to evaluating jobs. A broad banded pay structure, groups a combination of classification into pay bands with a larger spread between bottom and top rates of pay. It differs from a conventional grading system due to the greater pay range within each band and the smaller number of bands. Pay progression through each band is normally related to competency based, performance related, contribution or market rates of pay.
