Iacocca's plan was to build a car that was below 2,000 pounds, would sell for no more than $2,000, and would be delivered to the market in a record time of less than 25 months. One of the challenges that Ford was confronted with was the placement of gas tank. The typical gas tank in other Ford models which was proven effective and safe was installed over the rear end differential.
