In order to tackle this question I will first explain the difference between emergent and deliberate strategies, I will then discuss Tesco and its four part strategy followed by stating which strategy Tesco pursued. Finally I shall provide a conclusion which will justify my findings. The term strategy is defined in various ways by academics, practioners and authors. Mintzberg provides a meaningful definition as "a pattern in a stream of decisions." [1987:257] This definition is very much related to emergent and deliberate strategies. If we compare the difference between emergent and deliberate strategies, we could use Mintzbergs literature from strategic management journal which states that deliberate strategy is an intended strategy which is realized strategy as it was originally intended by the organisation. Emergent strategy is when realized strategy was never an intended strategy by the organisation, it emerged from changes during implementation or misjudgement of environment. Tesco has a four...
