Was the British Industrial Revolution founded on the Atlantic slave economy? Although there are differing interpretations of the Industrial Revolution, for example, Mathis describing it mainly as 'structural industrial change between 1750-1850', most historians, such as Crafts and Wrigely viewed the Industrial Revolution as 'rapid growth leading to rising per capita incomes over time, to unprecedented levels in society, a result of the revolutionary changes in technology and organization in society. Ashton depicted a number of factors he believed catalysed the industrial revolution, namely 'inventions', 'the expansion of commerce', 'capital accumulation', 'elimination of corporation regulation, giving rise to economic freedom' and 'heightened social mobility'. Henceforth, if it is possible to say that the British Industrial Revolution was founded on the Atlantic slave economy, then this must have been the key factor in driving changes such as those highlighted by Ashton.
