The United States served as the defender and security provider of the Europeans who were recovering from the terrible destructions of the war and feared the Communist threat of the Soviet Union from the East. The roles in this system were clearly defined: the US was accepted as the leading power that would determine the direction and outcome of important policies. Broadly speaking the alliance was based on three principles: the acknowledgment of a common threat: the Soviets; the acceptance of US superiority and almost automatic compliance with US guidelines; and the support for the Franco-German engine as the key player in European integration.
