Colonialism and its effects on today's world Assignment: Discuss the effects of colonialism for the relationship between the first world and third world of today. Make reference to economic, political, social and cultural aspects of the post- colonial era. Throughout history, there have been numerous examples of more powerful groups of people dominating those with less power. However, the most global in nature of this type of domination has been the colonisation of vast areas of the world by various European powers from the sixteenth to the twentieth century. This colonial empire "...was not only a political and economic, but also a social and cultural system" (King, 1991, p.5). While colonialism, that is "...the conquest and direct political control of other people's land..." (Williams and Chrisman, 1993, p.2), has ended, the continuing power of Europeans, and their descendants in North America, over many spheres of life in third world countries, can largely be traced...
