In the UK and in continental Europe, one of the biggest priorities has been to reduce unemployment figures yet the problem of rising unemployment has risen past any previous expectations. While looking at causes of rising unemployment in recent history I will also attempt to give explanations for the differences between UK and European unemployment figures. A look at the recent changes in UK unemployment goes as follows. After having very low rates until the 1960's the rate rose rapidly, hitting a peak in the recession of the early 1980's.
