Many argue that the above definition is the only justification for capital punishment, but it can also be reasoned following the notions of; deterrence, retribution, denunciation and to some extent reductivism. But as with every discussion these notions are qualified on both sides. If one takes the view of the retributivist, punishment should be seen as an end in itself, wrongdoers should be punished since they deserve it. This is a backward looking theory in that it seeks to justify punishment by deriving the fact that the offender committed an offence and should therefore be punished, not at the future consequences of the punishment.
