It was divided among occupying countries the United States, USSR, UK, and eventually France as well. Even the capital, Berlin, was divided between east and west. It wasn't until the famous fall of the Iron Curtain that all of Germany finally unified. All four previously occupying nations formally relinquished all rights on March 15th, 1991.
