As many plead for the undoubted necessity of it, others pity the cruelty of such an act. One of the most widely debated and never ending controversies is the death penalty. Whether a person is for or against the death penalty it is easy to see the opposition's point of view, even if they don't agree with it. This heated debate has gone on for years and will continue for years to come, because both parties make valid claims on the issue. Those who are for the death penalty support their position with arguments such as the death penalty deters crime, it is more economical than leaving a prisoner in jail for life, and that the punishment should fit the crime.
